During the first week of placement I took part in a training week at the Park Centre the base of Links SSP. During these sessions I acquired the skills required to coach many sporting activities; these included Goalball, Handball, Frisbee, Cricket, Tri Golf, Tennis, Balance Bikes and Orienteering.
Throughout the training sessions I was shown and took part in many drills and progressive games, that I could take in to schools to allow me to coach classes of mixed ability.
All these sessions were conducted in a professional manner but still had a competitive and fun element to them. Making sessions fun and competitive is the main objective when engaging children in sporting activities, as its often what guides them to take part in future sporting events and it makes your job a lot easier.
Accompanying the training, I got the chance to observe and help Russ with a balance bike session at Valley Park School, this gave me first hand experience of coaching this type of activity.
Through out my time on placement I had set my self the task of trying to increase the awareness of the organisation. This involved contacting local newspapers and radio stations asking if they could advertise the organisation and scheduling interesting and engaging Facebook posts.
During my second week I went in to primary schools and coached a variety of sports. These included a lacrosse sessions at St Marie’s primary school with year 5 and 6 and Basketball at Arbourthorne Community Primary School.
The South Yorkshire School Games took place during this week. The games showcases the sporting excellence of South Yorkshire youngsters in a variety of sports, including athletics, gymnastics, cheerleading, boccia, new age kurling, netball, basketball and judo.
At this event I had the job of inputting the scores of the Gymnastics and Cheerleading in to a excel spread sheet. This gave a overall score for the schools, and then put them in a ranked order based on an average.
Furthermore I was given the chance to gain experience using WordPress, this is the software used to develop the website. WordPress is a personal publishing platform which allows the user to focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability of a website.
